Hi,
I'm looking for a pair of compacts that'll fit nicely in my rucksack or pocket. Budget £200 to max £230.
Recommendations gratefully received.

I wanted a pair for taking on high mountain walks and after a lot of deliberation and comparison decided to buy the Swarovski 8x20. They are the smallest "top" compact and I just liked them. I am not a bino snob and my Nikon SEs are my favourite binos.
If I wasnt mountain walking I would probably get some 8X25 porros like the Olympus PCI.
Others you might consider are the Fumoto Classic 7x24 or the well recieved Bushnell Custom Compact 7x26 Binoculars at http://www.microglobe.co.uk

Mark[/quote]Within your budget (just) you can get the Nikon HG L 8x20, which, together with the Leica Ultravid 8x20, is the best compact there is, according to Alula.
Interestingly, though Kimmo regards the Opticron Taiga as not matching up to the top two, he does say that it is brighter and sharper than them and "contrast and colour rendition are very good and viewing is easy and natural". The only real drawback to the Taiga is the 6.0° FOV.
I have the Olympus PCI 8x25 (which I believe to be the same as the Taiga) and I can vouch for its excellence. The view is so good that the FOV feels much bigger than 6.0°. I was going to buy the Nikon, which I've tried several times and liked very much, but after spending half an hour with the Olympus, I decided not to bother.
Try them out if you can, but as long as they feel okay, you probably won't go wrong with any of them.
